Numbers

I had it on my New Year's List, among other things, to undertake to read the whole bible this year. Being the book on which my faith is founded, the idea should not be daunting. Which is not to say it doesn't pose challenges, meaning these books within that one must be tempted to skip reading to avoid quitting out of boredom altogether. Anybody who's been through the whole bible can attest to that.

Take the Book of Numbers. Absolutely a far cry in excitement from the wonderful creationist account of Genesis, the name of the book alone gives the red light warning to my right-brain thinking. It is largely about census figures on the names and the population of Israel's tribes and the families that compose them. Such painstaking detail is given to genealogy here, which enables the bible reader to trace the lineage of Jesus back to Adam and Eve. Given, it is significant. And tediously boring.

My tack, like a baby Christian, is to read guided by a daily devotional that assigns the chapters to read each day, which should get me through the whole thing by the end of the year. Certainly far from the urgency of a student or verse-quoting bible veteran because I'm definitely not there by a long shot. But God sees my motives and will surely reward me for my efforts, I know it. Meantime, I shall be parking my ass in the bookstore this afternoon to pick out a few alternate reads as a reward for myself. Yay!
