Any Major Dude Will Tell You
Have you ever seen a squonk's tears? Well, look at mine
The people on the street have all seen better times.
-- Steely Dan
The good news is, school is cancelled again, which comes as a welcome treat for one of my daughters who expected to celebrate her birthday today with her nose buried in some really dreadful algebra. Lucky her. A nice lunch somewhere later now becomes an imperative, which is just as well because a despedida dinner for Mom was cancelled last night due to a minor agitation in the marines headquarters late afternoon, which all of a sudden had most of the city staying home, glued to the television to watch unfold what could have been a major cataclysm in the military ranks that was circumvented after 5 hours of artful negotiation. Now we can celebrate two occasions.
The reality here in Metro Manila is that we expect all these little earthshakes to happen, like we were sitting at the foot of a rumbling, waking up volcano, and waiting it out till the big one happens. On the surface, it adds an element of excitement for the unpredictability of the coming days ahead. In reality, it pushes us deeper back into restlessness and instability that fixes us into this revolutionary state of mind that really pulls us farther away from the way of life that we truly all desire. Why does it now become so hard to imagine an end to all this? Maybe because the secret is not into the forward looking, but rather backwards, which one twisted mind suggests that really makes a helluvalot of sense, considering the turn of events (not to mention our predilection for natural disasters) so similar to the 70s, that happen quite aplenty around these parts. Smells like Marcos to me . How bizarre, how bizarre.
