Happy People
Valentine's Day came and went, leaving on its trail an air of sweetness permeating the atmosphere for all that aggregated oxytocin rush, this the handiwork of a few thousand lovers' lip-locking marathon at the romantic Manila Bay of the beautiful sunset, for this year's Lovapalooza. I imagine, the conservatives freaking out (fornication! fornication!) no end over this, as much as they probably would when Brokeback Mountain hits the theaters in Manila soon. Spoilsports.
Anyhow, it is good to know that love never goes out of fashion, as evidenced by the many instances of smiling people, wielding flowers, in the malls, on the streets. It is rank, rife and alive and in the air, love. And if ever there is any doubt on as to the Filipinos' true ranking on the world happiness indicator (where we purportedly sit on the top 10 all the time), I can attest for myself that Filipinos are just this smiling, partying lot, not to be left behind with celebrations (which probably doesn't help our economy), and are too forgiving of evil spawns of Satan masquerading as these jolly, corpulent, public officials who can never be more unlike Santa Claus.
Sure I am a disgruntled citizen (aren't we all?). Sure I have my eyes rolling whenever I hear our President having extricated herself again from some charge of serious wrongdoing (and yours?). Sure I am dumbfounded whenever the price of gasoline sneakily goes up overnight every three days (like who wouldn't be?). But I am not gonna kill myself stressing over these things, I really won't. Instead, I choose to switch on to the pleasing frequency of love, family values, tradition and other comforting, familiar things that immediately switches me off to the reality of corruption, ignorance, poverty, drug abuse and despair so prevalent in this country. Why? Because I can. How? Because it's Valentine's Day. Simple, isn't it?
