Cold Shower
The airconditioner in my room might have been set to 'sleep'. It stopped in the middle of the night, and the sudden dryness of the air and the silence jolted me right out of my sleep, now I'm awake. I would normally be up about this time anyway, although my body tells me that I could have slept in much longer today. Yesterday, the heat was too oppressive and exhausting, and it seems to have sapped the energy out of me, like kryptonite to Superman. To my mind, what better way to recharge than to lie down a bit more, to chase the lambs of sleep ....
So now I am up and alert and I'll take a shower very soon. I will turn the knob all the way to the left (come to think of it, are there shower knobs that turn to the right to get the water going?) to let the stream of water out in full force. A cold, jolting, shower, with no heater on.
There's a certain violence to a cold shower. The harshness of the cold jetstream gives the body a brutal massage, running electric currents that ground the system into an almost petrified state for moments that gradually eases the body temp into normal. Then you experience an exhilarating pleasurable feeling. It's a fine line, like pain that becomes pleasure. Is that why a cold shower is cure for momentary afflictions? A lost momentum, a bruised ego, a lethargic state. Whatever it is, I shall be taking a cold shower and not for the reasons I stated above.
This morning, I will take a shower because I want to sing.
