Words

hotdog \HAHT-dog\ verb
: to perform in a conspicuous or often ostentatious manner;
especially : to perform fancy stunts and maneuvers

That, delivered to my inbox via the Merriam-Webster online, purveyor of my daily candy. And to think I only knew hotdog as an Oscar Mayer production, made edible by highly processed animal fat and viscera loaded with salt and preservatives, encased in a sac, that goes perfectly well with ketchup and dijon mustard. What a delightful new thing to learn!

To gain the facility of a new word is a wonderful experience. It is like adding a new bauble to your box of precious gems that you can pick out from to wear as you fancy. To pronounce it is smooth as a buterball candy that loves to linger velvetlike in your mouth, lilting at your tongue. To make it your very own is like adding a weapon to your arsenal of eloquence. Nothing could be better.

For me, words are these colorful, exotic beads that one strings to make for a beautiful necklace, like hidden hues to enrich a palette of color, these essential pieces to complete the ever-growing jigsaw puzzle of thought.

Words come as precious as their weight in promise, or fatal in the deception of a lie. Words can aid to express the nuances of a budding attraction, the unbridled passion of a lover, the exquisite pain of love, the rending desolation of a broken heart, the maddening swing of emotions. Words can burn through like fiery embers, pierce like cold, sharp daggers. They capture the fleeting insignificance of a dew drop, the melancholic ephemera of a dying sunset. And only words are able express the fragility of a baby's breath, and the tenderness of a mother's love.

Everyday, I dip into my stash of baubles and find it to be a treasure trove of words. I'm rich this way. If I should find myself with nothing much else, at least I can be sure of one thing: that I will never be at a loss for words.
