A Good Day
This morning, we drove out to San Pablo City, 86 kilometers south of Manila. The drive going there is always nice. One has to pass the Southern Luzon Expressway, then take the Calamba Road exit, which is the last one out to the right after the tollgate, and the road tapers off into a narrow provincial road that winds along the towns of Batangas and Laguna. These roads I know because I've travelled so many times this way before.
The road may not be wide but the driving is pleasant. Surrounded by lush greenery on both sides, a profusion of old trees dot the highway. Old mango trees stand in line, strong, sturdy and already showing promise of many fruits for the picking in the next few months. The Acacia trees jut out in random order, one seemingly older and taller than the previous, with their topmost branches, swaying along the direction of the wind which was blowing strong today. These trees that balance on their tall and ancient limbs seem fragile in their age, but they really stand steady despite countless storms they've had to weather in the past. Flambuoyant Flame Trees abound, towering, majestic and in full bloom, crowned with their red blossoms that stand out so brightly from a distance, which provides perfect contrast to the greens and the brightness of the day.
There were shrubs of Bouganvilleas to be seen as well. These, flowering profusely in white, lilac and fuschia, and so pretty. I opened my window at some point, wanting to feel the wind on my face and taking in the smell of it which I love. So nice. I felt heady and it was all good.
I have the comfort of familiarity with every sharp turn and curve along the way and I love driving this road, even if I wasn't driving today. Even so, the thrill was not wasted on me, and I had all the time to observe and absorb the surroundings that are normally beautiful but more particularly so today. I guess I just woke up on the right side of the bed, and everything seemed to be very nice, from the drive to the time that we spent in the house by the lake. Today was a really fine day.
