Organic Market
The bagel man is back. He had been absent for quite a while from the organic market, and it was good to see him today.
The Organic Market is part of my easy Saturday morning routine, this after early breakfast with my husband at the Country Waffles. This morning I ordered the garden omelette, my favorite which didn't fail me as always, that set me off to a good start.
Once in the market, I immediately got hit with a vegetable high, all from the tangy, pungent smell of pure freshness that I love, from all the lovely produce that abound. Naturally, I went for the stall of the tomato farmer first. His are beautiful and bigger than a womanly fist, and juicy with just the right sweetness to them. I pick out the ones still a little greenish around the stem, and I like to slice these into big fat rings, to top with slivers of tofu cheese (tofu marinated in seasoned olive oil with pesto and garlic that's also available in the market), and I drizzle them with red wine vinegar, crack some black pepper with a dash of salt on top, which makes for a really wonderful salad.
I went around some more and picked out a bunch of cilantro, some squash flowers for being so pretty, giant ribs of celeries, arugula, red radishes, and a few other things that the weekend farmers told me that they picked with their own hands. I love talking to these people. I love the way they know each and every vegetable, how they take pride in the fact that their plants were grown without the use of pesticides. What a kindred life that is and when I grow up, I want to retire in a farm and do like them.
There's one other interesting stall that I love going to, operated by the market's resident hippie. He sells beads, bamboo flutes, incenses, candles and soaps. I did not purchase anything from him today though I know that I will be needing some bars of citronella soap and lavender candles from him by next week.
So the bagel man is back, and I happily got the usual from him -- pesto bagels, toasted bagel chips, hummus, baba ganoush, and a tub of crunchy, pickled cabbage in brine, his newest product, which is really very good.
I love it. My fridge is so full of all these goodies to enjoy, which should keep everyone at home satisfied until next week when it's tiome to go back to the market to replenish on supplies.
